Omicrons linked to increased acute lung disease in young children
Acute pneumonia is a common respiratory disease in infants and young children. This happens when a child catches a cold and becomes infected with a virus that causes inflammation and swelling around the throat, windpipe, and bronchi. The disease is characterized by a dry, violent cough, and sometimes wheezing. In some severe cases, the airways can become dangerously constricted.

For the study, scientists evaluated 75 children with acute pneumonia and COVID-19 infection who presented to Boston Children’s Hospital emergency department between March 1, 2020, and January 15, 2022.

Most of the children in the study were under the age of 2, and 72 percent of them were boys. All but one child contracted a common influenza virus, SARS-CoV-2. More than 80% of acute pneumonia cases occurred after Omicron became the predominant virus variant in the United States.

No children died, but 9 children (12%) were hospitalized, 4 of whom required intensive care.

The steroid dexamethasone was used in 97% of the children in the study and 29% of the children treated in the emergency department. All hospitalized children received nebulized racemic epinephrine for moderate to severe acute cardiac disease. However, higher-than-normal doses must be given to children with COVID-19.

Expert opinion and advice

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, fewer than 5 percent of children with acute lung disease were hospitalized, and only 1-3 percent of them required intubation, according to experts.

Dr. Ryan Brewster, a co-author of the study and a specialist at Boston Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center (USA), said: “Hospitalization rates are quite high, and many patients develop acute pneumonia as a result of COVID-19 infection. – 19-19 indicates SARS-CoV -2 May cause more severe acute pneumonia than other viruses.”

Brewster stressed: “Further research is needed to find the most appropriate treatment for children with acute lung cancer caused by COVID-19.

Although mild acute condyloma acuminatum can be treated at home, experts say parents should take their child to a medical facility as soon as possible if the child develops the following symptoms:

– Frequent wheezing and dry cough at rest

– shortness of breath

– Increased fatigue or drowsiness

– purple lips or fingertips

– Fever over 380C for more than 3 days

Mild cancer symptoms lasting more than 7 days

While many viruses can cause acute nasopharyngitis, parents should consider the possibility of their child contracting COVID-19 and take them and other family members to see a doctor as soon as possible, experts say. better one. better one. better one. to check.
